What Is Trauma?
Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing event, leaving a lasting impact on how you think, feel, and respond to the world. The effects of trauma can stem from a single event or build over time from painful experiences in adulthood. For many people, however, trauma begins in childhood—within the very families meant to nurture and protect us.
Experiences such as childhood trauma, abandonment, abuse, mental illness, addiction, or divorce can create wounds tied to unmet core emotional needs—such as the need to feel loved, valued, heard, appreciated, or understood. When these core needs are not met, they can leave behind core wounds, which are unresolved emotional injuries that often influence behavior and emotional reactivity later in life. These wounds can create deep triggers in adulthood, making it difficult to trust others, communicate openly, or break free from patterns that feel painful yet hard to change.
Betrayal trauma is another form of trauma that can deeply affect a person’s sense of safety and trust. It occurs when someone you depend on for emotional connection or security—such as a partner, family member, or trusted loved one—violates that trust. Discovering infidelity, deception, or emotional betrayal can feel overwhelming and destabilizing, often leaving individuals questioning their reality, their self-worth, and their ability to trust again. Because relationships are meant to provide safety and connection, betrayal trauma can trigger intense emotional reactions such as anxiety, hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts, or deep feelings of grief and loss.
If you find yourself feeling stuck, emotionally reactive, or triggered by certain situations but unsure why, these responses may be connected to unresolved experiences and unmet needs from your past. Often, these triggers reflect a deeper longing to feel acknowledged, wanted, or approved. Addressing these core wounds and experiences of betrayal is an important step toward healing and emotional freedom.
One trauma therapy that can help with this process is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories that have become “stuck.” When trauma occurs, the brain may store memories in fragmented ways, causing the nervous system to continue reacting as if the danger is still present. EMDR therapy helps the brain safely reprocess these memories so they can be integrated in a healthier way, reducing emotional distress and allowing individuals to move forward with greater clarity, resilience, and emotional balance.
Trauma counseling in Orange County provides a safe space to process and heal these experiences. It helps you uncover how they’ve shaped your core beliefs, address negative patterns, and rebuild trust in yourself, others, and God. The Bible reminds us in Isaiah 61:3 that God brings “beauty for ashes” and “the oil of joy for mourning.” At New Beginnings Christian Counseling, we combine proven therapeutic approaches—like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy—with the truths of Scripture to help you heal and find freedom.
You don’t have to carry the weight of trauma alone. With God’s help and compassionate support, healing is possible, and we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.
Signs that you’re struggling with the effects of trauma:
- You feel disconnected from yourself or others, like you’re going through life on autopilot
- You avoid certain places, people, or situations because they remind you of what happened
- You struggle with trust, even in relationships where you know you’re safe
- You often feel “stuck” in the past, as if you’re reliving the event or carrying its weight every day
- You feel jumpy, on edge, or hyper-aware of your surroundings, like you’re always waiting for something bad to happen
- You find yourself reacting in ways that surprise or confuse you, like shutting down, getting angry, or withdrawing from others
- You have trouble remembering parts of what happened, but the emotions feel as real as ever
- You blame yourself for what happened, even though deep down you know it wasn’t your fault

Life on earth is fragile and fleeting—Scripture reminds us it’s just a vapor. Yet, it’s so easy to get caught up in the pressures of the world, wrestling with feelings of unworthiness or struggling to believe we’re truly loved by God. That inner voice can whisper lies: “You’re not good enough. You’ll never measure up.” But the truth? There’s nothing you can do to earn God’s love and nothing you need to do to deserve it.
At New Beginnings Christian Counseling in Orange County, we’re here to help you uncover and replace the lies of the enemy with the unshakable truth of God’s Word. We start by listening—really listening—to the story that has shaped who you are and how you live today. Questions About Trauma Counseling in Orange County
How do I know if I’ve experienced trauma?
What will trauma therapy look like?
Does trauma just happen in childhood?
Trauma can occur at any period in life (during childhood and/or adulthood), and some people have multiple experiences that are traumatic. This includes PTSD, which can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, leaving lasting emotional scars that affect how you respond to the world. Whether it’s childhood neglect, abuse, or traumatic experiences in adulthood, the impact of trauma can last for varying lengths of time.
Will therapy make me relive the trauma? I’m scared of opening up old wounds.
Talking about your life story and what you have experienced can cause some pain and discomfort. We can not guarantee that old wounds won’t be opened. But we can assure you that our heart is to bring healing and restoration and not just open old wounds unnecessarily.
What if I feel like my trauma isn’t “bad enough” to talk about? Can therapy still help?
Yes, therapy can help anyone who feels like they need additional support, like their feeling stuck or are having a difficult time in life. Whether a traumatic experience, negative experience, or adverse experience in childhood or adulthood, therapy can help you heal, forgive, and learn tools to live a healthier, meaningful life.
What if I don’t feel ready to talk about my trauma in therapy? Can we still work on it slowly?
Yes absolutely! We will always process trauma at your pace. We will never force anyone to share more than they are ready, or for longer than they are comfortable with. Our clients steer the ship when it comes to therapy sessions, direction, and speed. As therapists, we see ourselves as your guide, aiding you in charting your course through life.
